Foot Health Practitioner

A foot health practitioner (FHP) is a provider of routine private sector footcare - referred to as foot health practice.
The existence of Foot Health Practitioners and much of their scope of practice is acknowledged by the Department of Health in the UK.
In the United Kingdom and to a lesser extent The Republic of Ireland, the foot health practitioner undertakes the routine work necessary to help maintain the health of the foot, which may include: nail trimming & correction, (minor) skin conditions and their treatment, heel pain, corns, callus, verrucae, blisters, reconstruction of nails, treatment of cracked heels, athletes foot, management of ingrowing toenails (without surgical intervention), treatment of fungal nail infections (using both manual treatments & foot laser technology treatment) and general advice and guidance on foot care.
Some FHP's may also carry out complimentary practices such as remedial massage of the lower limb, specialist pedicure (aka a MediPedi) as well as therapies not directly related to foot health e.g. sports injury (massage) therapy, or reflexology,
They do not perform any invasive techniques (such as permanent correction of ingrowing toe-nails under local analgesia) or any injection therapies. They cannot dispense prescription only medicines or undertake advanced needling techniques for recalcitrant verrucae, as these fall under the remit of Chiropodists/Podiatrists.
